Murray Wins US Open

By on September 11, 2012

Andy Murray won his first grand slam title last night as he beat Novak Djokovic in the US Open final in New York. Olympic champion Murray, won a thrilling 5-set contest with the Australian Open champion 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 2-6.

Murray said after the match, ”It is what I have been working towards for the last 10 years of my life, It means the world to me.”

Murray has been in 4 previous grand slam finals but lost them all, however this victory makes him the first British man to win a grand slam since Fred Perry, 76 years ago.

Murray spoke to the media after the final which lasted almost five hours said he was “very very happy” to finally win a grand slam title.

“I think everyone is in a little bit of shock that it has happened,” said Murray. “I’ve seen my mum after I’ve lost Slam finals and she has been really upset. Everyone’s really happy.

“It is hard to explain. It has been a long, long journey to this point, so I don’t know if it is disbelief or whatever, but I am very, very happy on the inside. I’m sorry if I’m not showing it as you would like.”

Murray also received praise from Manchester United manager and fellow Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I’m really proud for the boy. That was a real test of a champion for me. I love watching tennis. It was more nerve-wracking than a Premier League match. I’m usually in control of my own situation but I wasn’t in control tonight.”

Murray said he hoped to “inspire” young Britons.

Murray’s victory capped off an unbelievable summer for British sport after Bradley Wiggins’ Tour de France victory and Team GB’s Olympic and Paralympic success.
