Bloc Party’s Kele influenced by Nirvana?

[DS]: Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke has revealed that the band’s new album is heavily influenced by Nirvana.

In an interview with Spinner, the singer said that the processing on Four was inspired by Nirvana’s 1989 debut Bleach.

Okereke said: “I was listening to a lot of Nirvana. I’ve never been that big a Nirvana fan, but I listened to Bleach a lot when we were making the record. I was really impressed by how raw the whole thing was and how intentionally under-produced it was.

“I just like the way it sounded, how visceral it [was]. I don’t think it would be so cool to write songs like [them]. I think when a lot of bands start out they make the mistake of wanting to sound like Nirvana.”

Okereke also revealed that despite rumours about his departure from the band in recent years, when the four-piece went back into the studio, things were just as they always had been.

“Once we started playing it all came very quickly,” he said. “It was all very instinctive how easy it was to write again. We’ve never had a problem making an idea come together.”

‘Octopus’, the lead single from Four, is out now. The album will be in stores and available to download on Monday.
